Today I’m three years officially in Canada. It also marks the end of Alison’s sponsorship of me. From now on, if I need financial assistance by the gouvernment of Canada/Québec, they won’t come knocking on Alison’s door to ask the money back from her.
To celebrate this important day we went to an all-you-can-eat Japanese restaurant but refrained from eating too much sushi (we did that another time, and it didn’t feel too good) so we had enough room left in our stomachs to have cake afterwards. At another place because the Japanese cuisine is not exactly renowned for its cake.

One of the really cool things about Canadian sponsorship is that the sponsee’s status is independent of their relationship with their sponsor. So the first thing that Mark was told as he was immigrating was that he was under no obligation to stay with me. That if I became abusive, he was to move out immediately and apply for welfare if he needed it. He would get the welfare and his permanent resident status would not be affected. My sponsorship agreement was with Quebec, not with Mark. Meaning that if Quebec had to make welfare payments to him they would go to me for reimbursement.
Also, partly because of the risk of abuse, a spouse or child is only sponsored for three years. For anyone else, sponsorship lasts ten years.
I’m so proud to be Canadian! (And Mark will be too,,,)

Hurray, yes, but Mark had to do a lot of kissing last night to reassure me that even though I wasnít his sponsor any more that we could still be friends.
