Sugar

[I lost my bag with my camera last week, but it is found. I only need to pick it up and I can only do that next week. Above photo is made by an amateur photographer (although with professional equipment) who thought Poupoune was so cute he needed to make a picture of her, that he emailed us afterwards.]
On our weekly walk we headed to Rigaud, where we walked in the melting snow for a couple of hours towards a commercial Cabane ‡ Sucre. In a Cabane ‡ Sucre, for the uninitiated, they cook the sap of the maple tree to make maple sirup, maple candy, maple butter and various other maple products. They usually also serve meals (washed down with lots of beer), accompanied with live music, but the $27.50 price was a bit steep for us. We also had to get back in time to Montréal where we had to go to a dance show with the participants of my dance class. So we stayed outside, did some people watching and enjoyed some free “tire d’erable”; molten maple sirup poured on snow, so it cools to a toffee-like substance that can be wound around wooden popsicle sticks to make very sweet lollypops. A Canadian tradition that after almost three years I still hadn’t encountered. I saved doing all the touristy stuff for the times when friends and family would visit, but so far the visits did not happen, so I better do these things myself. Next up, the annual cull of Harp seals!
Because our feet were sinking in the soft snow we had quite an exercise. Poupoune enjoyed it as well but the next day even she has very sore leg muscles. Pauvre chien.

This molten-maple-syrup-in-the-snow is described somewhere in the little house books (Laura and Mary). It fascinated me when I was a child, especially because I didn’t know maple syrup for real. It still has some mystic ring about it.

Oooh, another fan of the Little House books! I keep telling Mark that he really needs to read them if he wants to understand North America, and he keeps answering that he hated the television series, and then I assure him that the books and the TV series have nothing in common… but I think the real issue is that he’s the wrong age and gender.
Anyway, I think you’re thinking of the party at Grandma’s house in Little House in the Big Woods. There’s live music and people-watching there too.
When I was little and went to sugaring-offs on school trips, I found I wasn’t too fond of tire d’erable. The flavour was too strong for my youthful taste buds. These days I find the flavour even a bit bland, and tire is too sweet. Maybe I would have really loved it in my teens?

when i was young, every winter my mom would freeze a cake pan filled with snow and leave it in our freezer. then in the middle of summer, we would have “tire” (which is not the same as syrup – it has been left to cook longer for more evaporation) on snow. hmmm. (and now, just because i like you, i will spare you my long rambling rant about why i hate commercial cabanes ‡ sucres and will always refuse to go to one – see how nice i am?)
and once again, Poupoune: aaaaawww! what a cutie! that lady’s got attitude!

Don’t worry, we weren’t heading for the cabana ‡ sucre, it just happened to be on our trail. And since we were hungry we had lunch there, but just our regular muffins. Well OK, I admit, we bought some fresh cinnamon rolls, but they weren’t as good as the muffins.

Yup. She walked almost all of the way – four hours in soft snow with wet boots – and didn’t complain. She was sore for three days afterwards. I went and got her some dog arthritis magic potion with Chondroitin, Glucosamine, MSM and various special herbs. I looked up MSM and it’s a painkiller used in veterinary medicine – it’s used a lot for horses with sore muscles and tendons. Sounded perfect, and it worked.
Now that’s attitude!

y’know, the more i look at that picture of poupoune, the more i see her on a harley. not on the back or in a trailer – riding *her own* harley. (and this is where i share my fantasy of cats (and dogs) with cute little helmets with holes for the ears!) oh yeah!

Well, sheís clearly into the leather and bondage thing. With those garter and hose and that ATTITUDE she would be a hit leading the SF Dykes on Bykes parade, doncha think?

Aah yes, this was in the first Laura book, the same one — I think — where they also made the snow angels. Indeed I think Mark’s chance to really enjoy the books has passed, like your ideal tire-age, apparently, Alison. Actually, somehow I can’t even picture a 10-year-old Mark really enjoying them…
And what about the bag losing adventure, no story about that? Glad you’re going to get it back!
