Squeal

We got up very early today to start Alison’s driving education. Early in the morning the parking lots of the malls are still deserted and provide safe grounds for teaching inexperienced drivers the basic working of a manual car.
We practise using the clutch, braking and changing gears. And, by necessity, making turns, because the parking lot is not that big. Alison really liked that particular part of the curriculum, especially when she drove a bit too fast and the tires started to squeal.
It wasn’t as stressful to be taught by me as she thought beforehand, so that was good. I wasn’t totally at ease but nevertheless managed to keep my underpants clean.

When I got my first car, Herb had never driven standard. Tough luck my friend: she who pays decides! I showed him how over a few sessions, and he sucked. So we thought we’d try having our best friend teach him (even though years earlier I’m the one who showed that friend how to drive standard!). I stay home, they go. Well. Herb could drive standard! Without help from our friend — he “got” everything I taught him, but just couldn’t do it with me there!
As for me… I had my license at 16 and refused to drive until I was 17 because my mom’s car was standard and it scared me. Then I decided to take up the challenge. Half an hour later I could drive. So Alison, you can do it! Perhaps with another teacher, or on another day, but you can! And then there will be no going back:-)
